Young district with tranquil lake
With 1,110 inhabitants, Roland is slightly smaller than Vellern. The district celebrated its 50th birthday only in 2010. Roland originated as a factory settlement for the cement industry. The name Roland comes from the "Portland Zementwerk Roland AG" (Portland Cement Works Roland AG), which was built in 1909 at the level of the former Nordberg farm on the initiative of the citizens of Beckum. In 1917, the plant was taken over by Wicking Werke, but was already demolished in 1925. The name remained and later designated the village southwest of Neubeckum. Street names such as Viktoria- or Augustastraße still bear witness to the former Auguste Viktoria cement works. The nearby farming community is called Friedrichshorst, as was the railway station next to the quarry at that time. Today, there is one company in particular that shapes the district: Berief Food GmbH, a nationally important manufacturer of vegan and vegetarian products.
Vital club life
There is also a vital club life in Roland, for example through the Roland e. V. shooting club. The games on the artificial turf pitch of SC Roland 1962 e. V. regularly offer a sporting attraction. The St. Michael day-care centre with family centre offers a great range of activities for the little ones and their families. And some people from Roland are committed to their village in the "Bürgerzentrum Roland" support association; attractive and individual village entrance signs bear witness to this. A cosy Christmas market is held every year at the community centre.
Enchanted nature
Behind the railway line of the Westphalian State Railway in Roland, you enter another world: after more than 40 years of quarrying, the former Friedrichshorst quarry of the Dyckerhoff company has become quiet. A walk around this recreation and bird sanctuary is the perfect opportunity to switch off. The Hinteler farming community is also a popular destination. The thick oak tree at Hof Schulze Pellengahr, a beautifully situated country inn, measures 6.88 metres in circumference. The chapel there is a popular wedding venue of the registry office.
