Great interest in the office of lay judge
We were looking for at least 8 people each for juvenile and adult criminal law.
The interest shown by the people of Beckum was enormous. We received 25 applications for the youth programme. There were even 100 applicants for the adult sector. "The great willingness of the citizens to take on this important voluntary work is extremely pleasing. I would like to thank you for this great interest," explained Mayor Michael Gerdhenrich immediately after the registration deadline.
What happens next?
The applications will now be reviewed by the city administration and prepared for the necessary committee decisions. The Committee for Children, Young People and Families will determine the list of nominees for lay assessors for young people at its meeting on 1 June. At its meeting on 20 June, the Beckum town council will decide on the list of proposals for lay assessors in adult criminal cases.
The lists of nominations are then made public. Objections may be raised against individual proposals. The lists are then sent to the local court together with any objections. The election committee at the local court will select the required number of lay judges from the nominations from September 2023. Those elected will then be notified by the court.
