Gunter Demnig lays 20 Stumbling Stones

They complement the Stolpersteine that have been laid in Beckum so far. The town of Beckum is supporting the new installation campaign, for which the artist Gunter Demnig has come to Beckum especially. Sponsors were sought for these Stolpersteine. All the sponsorships were allocated within a short space of time, including to pupils from the Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium.

What are "Stolpersteine"?
The artist Gunter Demnig commemorates the victims of the Nazi era by placing brass memorial plaques in the pavement of the street or pavement in front of their last chosen place of residence. "A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten," says Gunter Demnig. The stones in front of the houses bring to life the memory of the people who once lived here. It is written on the stones: HERE LIVED... A stone. A name. One person. "Stumbling blocks"

Group of people pursues the laying of a stumbling stone
Gunter Demnig started off at Weststraße 19 in the presence of many sponsors and with great interest.
  • are concrete cubes the size of paving stones that are set into the pavement in front of the houses or properties of former Jewish residents,
  • bear a brass plaque with the inscription "Here lived ... Deported ... Murdered in ...".
  • commemorate expulsion and extermination under the Nazi regime,
  • mark the beginning of the path that ended in the extermination camp,
  • draw attention to the individual fate,
  • are to be "committed",
  • are also art in public space,
  • are laid with the consent of the Central Council of Jews and the Yad Vashem memorial,
  • are financed through sponsorships from citizens' initiatives, associations, schools, descendants of victims and other individuals.
