Neubeckum leisure centre turns 50

From the very beginning, the Neubeckum leisure centre was an open house for all children, teenagers and young adults (aged 6 to 27) and in the early years had up to 200 visitors a day. What was originally a traditional youth centre initially became a children's and youth centre. Since 2021, Freizeithaus Neubeckum has been a district centre for all generations with a focus on children and youth work. The building on Gottfried-Polysius-Strasse offers 1,200 square metres of space and three floors of great opportunities to meet up and spend leisure time. "What's happening here is amazing. There's a lot of life here," says Mayor Michael Gerdhenrich, summarising the work at the leisure centre. Together with Olaf Schulte, Head of the Youth and Social Affairs Department, and Bernd Matuszek, Head of the Children, Youth and Family Support Department, he praised the work of the leisure centre team, who always move with the times and put their heart and soul into their work.

Intergenerational, constantly new offer
Children, young people, families and older people have the opportunity to meet and try out new things at the Neubeckum leisure centre. While darts, billiards, table tennis and the cinema (there is a separate cinema room with 40 seats) have lost none of their popularity, there is also WLAN and computer games in the mobile phone and internet age. The regular lunch with delicious stews, where the generations come together in the café, is also very popular. With the change in functions, the face of the building has also changed: during the renovation between 2018 and 2020, the disco room was given windows, a new floor and new furnishings. The 150 square metre hall is now a modern conference room. The well-equipped teaching kitchen in the basement is also popular. Cookery courses, children's birthday parties, swap meets, skating, dancing, helping to shape the city: The team led by Uwe Mischke and Sabine Will is always ready to listen to the needs of people in the neighbourhood.

Anniversary to be celebrated for a year with tried and tested and new events
The anniversary will be celebrated throughout the year with long-standing cooperation partners, with monthly events that reflect the entire spectrum of the centre under the heading "new and classic highlights". Many cooperation partners are involved: the Neubeckum trade association, Filou, the town library, the mosque association, the skater group, Verve, Citycleaner, the Neubeckum local history association and the German Red Cross. It all kicks off on 20 January with the Long Disney Film Night. Over the course of the year, there are tried and tested events such as Skateday in June, the Sunflower Festival in August and the Dance Contest in November. New is a musical written and directed by young people on the subject of corona, which will celebrate its premiere in February. And the finissage of the street art in the tunnel is planned for October. Here, the young people will help design their city in several units. A flower bed will also be designed together with the Citycleaners. Celebrate and be amazed!
