Extended programme for city tours
Exciting stories in the anniversary year
800 years of Beckum
"Today, this important event offers us the perfect opportunity to relive the exciting development of the town: Join us on a unique journey through 800 years of history - including beer from Beckum," says historian Christian Raestrup, who is already travelling the Münsterland region with various tourist tours.
Together with Ingo Löppenberg and Eva Hübscher from the Beckumer Heimatverein, he will be offering exciting city tours in the Pütt city that will provide insights into the eventful history of Beckum beyond 2024. Under the motto "Beckum Insights", the various city tours will start the new season in May.
There are visible and hidden treasures from the past to discover: the former town hall on the market square, which now houses the town museum, still bears witness to Beckum's glorious past as a trading town with its striking façade. A special highlight awaits guests in St Stephen's Church with the nationally renowned Prudentia Shrine, a joint effort by Beckum citizens in the Middle Ages. The tour continues with the time of the cement boom: stone coolers and factory barons, important figures of this turbulent time, have left a lasting mark on the location to this day. The guided tours with Christian Raestrup end with a joint "Stiefel beer": In the oldest brewery in Westphalia, participants can finish with a toast of real Beckum beer.
The defence tower is the last of the former 22
The rest of the programme also includes lots of interesting facts and sights, such as the guided tour with Eva Hübscher, who takes guests young and old to exciting places that are not always open to the public. "I like to visit the old defence tower, which was built as part of Beckum's town fortifications back in the Middle Ages. Of the original 22 defence towers, which together with the town wall, the four town gates with ramparts and double ramparts formed the medieval town fortifications, only this one still remains today."
Beckum's darkest chapter
The Beckum historian Ingo Löppenberg finally offers guided tours in the footsteps of recent history. His tour aims to shed light on Beckum's darkest chapter and deals with the seizure of power and the implementation of the National Socialist dictatorship in Beckum in the 1930s. A tour on the history of Jewish citizens is also an integral part of his themed tours through the town.
Geist des Steinkühlers
On the initiative of Beckum's city marketing and cultural office, a programme has been created that has a lot to offer not only for adults but also for the youngest city explorers. This is especially true for the Beckum City Museum: "We will be there with special activities," reports museum educator Silvia Brede. For example, "The Ghost of the Stone Cooler" will be performed by theatre educator Tobias Winopall on 21 June at 6 pm and 22 June from 3 pm, taking children on an entertaining journey through time into Beckum's cement history.
In addition to the various guided tours in the city centre, the Cement Museum and the Blacksmith Museum await visitors. The windmill on the Höxberg is also a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. The Höxberg windmill tour can be booked with a culinary offer at the "Zur Windmühle" hotel restaurant.
