Climate protection prize 2024
Exemplary climate protection projects honoured
The St. Stephanus daycare centre was delighted to receive the first prize of 800 euros. The daycare centre uses the income from the photovoltaic system to purchase regional and seasonal products, which are then prepared together. In this way, the benefits of renewable energies are combined with sustainable consumption and environmental awareness is taught to the youngest children in a very practical way.

Second place went to Rosa Parks Comprehensive School. The school received 700 euros for its projects on waste avoidance, sustainable mobility and species protection as well as environmental campaigns. Among other things, the school has introduced reusable packaging, planted flower beds and built nesting boxes. The Beckum Animal and Species Protection Initiative was awarded 3rd prize (500 euros) for the protection of wild and domestic animals and raising public awareness of biodiversity and animal protection. A total of 8 projects were honoured, including sustainable house communities, a near-natural garden and the construction of nesting aids.
The joint projects organised by associations or schools ranged from hands-on activities or themed days on climate protection to workshops for a more sustainable everyday life. The jury of the Climate Council was once again able to select the winners of this year's Climate Protection Award from a wide variety of projects.
Mayor Michael Gerdhenrich thanked all participants for their commitment to sustainability and climate protection:
"You are committed to preserving our fragile planet at home, in your club, in your organisation! And the great thing is that climate protection can be fun. The projects show that impressively."
The climate protection award is intended to recognise the diverse commitment to climate protection shown by the people of Beckum. The focus is on the community concept and the role model character. To support this commitment, the climate protection prize is awarded every two years. It is endowed with 2,000 euros.
