Construction work on the west pond completed
A lot has happened since the start of construction on 17 July: the installation of a new hard-wearing plastic sealing membrane was a challenge, but it was a success: the old damaged pond liner had to be removed first and the base of the pond had to be extensively prepared.
The bank areas were flattened and naturally designed bank zones were created instead of the stones set in concrete. Over 2200 selected pond plants were planted here, which fulfil important ecological functions: Their filtering effect enriches the water with oxygen and prevents the formation of algae. The plants also provide shelter for various animal species.
It is now possible to access the pond from the west bank. Stones have been piled up along the edge of the wall and the fence that previously served as fall protection is no longer necessary. The green areas around the pond have been made more open to allow citizens a wide view from each side of the shore. The shallow water area in the south-east corner has thus been replaced by a lawn and the informal path between the pond and the Werse has been given a new layer of gravel. Another lime tree completes the row of trees on the north bank. A special highlight is the footbridge, which gives the feeling of "floating" directly over the water.
In the new year, the project will be completed with new benches on the eastern bank and a lounger in the area between the Werse and the pond.
