Disability representative of the city of Beckum
Michaela Al-Chabi shows the way to a better quality of life
She took over this role from Monika Björklund in April 2024. "It is a matter close to my heart to promote the quality of life and participation of people with disabilities in Beckum and to strengthen the dialogue between all citizens," says Al-Chabi. As part of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the city of Beckum is pursuing a large number of measures that are anchored in the inclusion plan. This serves as the basis for the continuous improvement of inclusion and accessibility in urban areas.
This applies to public facilities such as administrative buildings, schools and the public library. Michaela Al-Chabi is also focussing on the adaptation of bus stops. In recent years, the town of Beckum has also invested heavily in redesigning public paths to facilitate the mobility of people with disabilities. This includes converting kerbs, installing tactile guidelines and improving signage. There is also a growing range of inclusive events and programmes in sport and leisure. The inclusion plan is constantly being updated in order to further reduce existing barriers and find new solutions.
"As an affected mother, I know from my own experience how important it is to recognise and break down barriers," reports the new disability officer for the town of Beckum.
Contact person and signpost
She sees herself as a contact person, but also as a signpost to other offers of help. Her expertise is also in demand for construction projects in the town of Beckum, such as the planning of a barrier-free ramp for the redesign of the eastern Hellbachtal.
"I cordially invite all Beckum residents to contact me with their questions, concerns or ideas. Regardless of whether it's about the barrier-free design of our city or social participation." Michaela Al-Chabi can be found in room 160 at Beckum Town Hall and can be contacted on 02521 29-6721 or al-chabi@beckum.de. If required, she is available for a meeting at the citizens' office. A mobile loop is available for people with hearing impairments.
3 December is International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Today, 3 December, is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, on which many campaigns and events are held around the world to raise public awareness and focus attention on the topic. On this day, Michaela Al-Chabi is taking part in a symposium on the subject of "Parents with disabilities".
