A bird's eye view of Beckum

Hellbach

Like all streams in Beckum, the Hellbach also has its source in Beckum's urban area. It rises northwest of Vellern, at the Domhof, and flows through Beckum over a length of six kilometres in the direction of Vorhelm.

As the only stream that crosses the Neubeckum district, the Hellbach is of particular importance here and forms part of an important green corridor.

Taking flood protection into account, the Hellbach is to be developed in a near-natural way in order to create ecological continuity for watercourse organisms. The aim is to hold back floods in a near-natural way and increase the diversity of biotopes.

The renaturalisation of a section west of Neubeckum, between Kaiser-Wilhelmstraße and the railway embankment, began in summer 2023 and will be completed in 2024.

Another measure is now the redesign of the Hellbach valley.
